Industry Sectors

The history of the North Central Indiana region continues to center on the manufacturing sector accounting for 23% of all jobs in 2008. However, this figure is down from 40% of all jobs in the year 2000. Within the manufacturing sector, transportation equipment manufacturing accounts for almost 60% of all manufacturing in the region. Manufacturing of transportation equipment has concentrated in this region for a variety of reasons, including strategic location, proximity to markets, utility costs and workforce, which are critical components for any industry sector or business.

Other primary industrial sectors within the region include retail trade, health care, construction, and warehousing and distribution. In 2008, two significant warehousing and distribution operations located in the region. These distribution centers as well as other developments continue to diversify the overall regional economy.

Major employers within the region include: Chrysler, Delphi, Square D-Schneider Electric, Haynes International, Armour Echrich, Tyson Foods, Federal Mogul, Rochester Metals, Lau Industries, Bottcher America, Steel Parts Manufacturing, Frito-Lay, and Emerson Controls.

Companies that locate in North Central Indiana qualify for the region's extensive business assistance program, which includes financial, training, international, technical, and workforce assistance.
